Nexus One Review

Posted on January 20th, 2010 by admin

Google-Nexus-One Nexus One is a nice Snapdragon powered, one HTC phone that cleverly combines the friendly user interface with a slick industrial design. The phone can easily go head to head with iPhone 3GSs, or the Droid phones of the whole world. This mobile phone works with Android (2.1 "Flan).

Right now many are wondering if Nexus One is going to live up to the all the expectations that were made around it. Also, are we going towards Android autocracy?

Hardware

Anyone can tell that Nexus One is a handsome phone with some interesting edges, curved design, that makes you lust. The body is ultra-thin and no detail has been left to chance.

The Design

HTC has managed to reduce the thickness of this phone. Now it measures only 11.5 mm in thickness and 59.8mm and 119mm across, up and down. Also, the phone feels comfortable due to its curved edges and the tapered top. There are four hardware buttons, touch sensitive, on the display, laid out just like the four hard keys of Droid: home, back, menu and search. This looks like a new trend for the Google devices.

Internals

Nexus one uses on 1GHz Snapdragon with one CPU from the Qualcomm. It is the same type of processor that powers the HD2. Plus, the phone comes with 512MB of both RAM and ROM. But the downside is that you are still limited to a small partition dedicated to applications. The phone’s display is an AMOLED, a nice 480 x 800 capacitive touchscreen. It also comes with a proximity sensor, a light sensor and one accelerometer. Not to mention the fact that it has an HSPA-capable GSM radio, WiFi, one micro SD slot [preloaded with one 4 GB card] and AGPS chip.

The Snapdragon processor makes this phone a very fast one. But even if the applications open up quite fast, the phone does not bring an entire new Android experience, which for some users can be disappointing. Also, this phone does not have multitouch support, dual-mode capability for GSM and CDMA networks, and also the native tethering. Right now, the Outlook calendar syncing can not be used either.

The Display

Among the things that users seem to love about this phone is the display. The 3.7-inch display looks really good Speaking of touch sensitivity, the mobile phone seems to be the best one with Android. The resolution is quite high also, (480 x 800). But on the downside it does not have the 54 pixels that we were expecting, taken the size of the screen into consideration. But that is not so dramatic. It may bother you sometimes, with some Google applications. For example, if you use Gmail you will have to scroll a bit down to see the menus. But the main concern are the colors on this touchscreen. There are some oversaturated colors used, some reds and oranges. This is one common effect that happens with the AMOLED displays. Many people consider it is a predefined setting making the colors appear brightly than they are, especially the oranges. Plus, if you want to take pictures outside in a sunny day, better forget about it. The light settings will not help you and your pictures will be a disaster.

But the fact that the phone has a gorgeous display, super fast lightning processor, take the edge off. Also, the enhanced voice capabilities are working flawlessly, giving the phone solid performance.

All in all, even if the phone has some features missing, Nexus One is a nice addition to the Android family and it brings good quality, with an improved voice control and the fast processor.

Nexus-One-Photo-0192012 Nexus one is one modern smartphone. This is the first step Google makes in approaching the phone sales segment. Without too much advertising, the phone has managed to generate a lot of excitement. The concept of a fresh “Google phone” entered people’s minds long time ago, before the appearance of Android. And now, after so much waiting, the Google Phone is here.

Nexus One seems to be an improvement in the camera area. Google people have improved the camera’s speed. They worked on the camera application. Now the 5 megapixel lens looks sharper. The images taken with the newly improved camera are surpassing any HTC issue of the same segment. Now the lens’s capabilities have improved and they are super speedy. But sometimes, the flash feels a bit stark. We can reconsider that if we take into consideration its size.

Also, besides the camera application, Google has also done some changes to the Gallery app. They replaced the rather dull Android iterations with a new more attractive version that is so user friendly. It also has more options like a scan slideshow and nice pan. Also, browsing pictures using the new gallery is so much easier to do now than in the past.

Additionally, the phone has a new grid icon at the end of the homescreen. When you press it, it will bring up a preview of the webOS card-style of all the homescreen pages. This opens up to a lot of possibilities. All in all, a much expected mobile phone with a lot to show off.

Nexus One Phone Release Date

Nexus One Phone Release Date

Alright consumers get ready to buy Google’s nexus One phone. The word is out that you can buy Google phone directly from Google’s store or through a carrier of your choice. Google is in process to add more carriers to provide service on Nexus One phone. Some of the carriers will start giving services by 2010 end. T-Mobile will start selling online services to users right away and Vodafone and Verizon will start giving service by mid 2010. The current Nexus One phone release is through Google operated web stores only.

Google clearly is trying ti beat apple corporation in his core competence. Like Apple beat Sony in MP3 player category same Google is trying to do with Apple. Google is coming out with cool features such as voice enabled keyboard and cool widgets to access YouTube videos. The idea is to provide new experience to users to access web enabled application and give social networking a new meaning.

The current sales pitch only through Google web stores are to create more hype abut the phone as phones are not available in market. Also it gives added advantage to Google to streamline their production release and same time they can structure their release step by step. Getting in to agreement with different carriers in world and providing services in well released manner.

It will be interested to see how iPhone consumers will react to new features of Nexus One Phone. Clearly the cool features of Nexus One have created ripples in iPhone community. No body accepted to break current monopoly of iPhone in smart phone so easily. If Google’s nexus One phone lives up to the expectation of smart phone community and there is freedom to choose carriers and economical monthly plan then this is knockout punch to iPhone.

Consumers are finding difficult to choose between Nexus One and iPhone. I talked to many collogues and friends about their interest in switching to Nexus One phone from Blackberry or iPhone. Especially I was interested in knowing from iPhone users about their reaction to Google’s announcement.
The first reaction from iPhone users are rebellion approach full of doubt and pinch of fear about Nexus one taking lead. The more I quizzed them they seem to be happy with iPhone feature but not so happy with carrier service(AT&T). As I talked more to iPhone users I found they are more interested in knowing finer details of Nexus One phone such as how sleek is Nexus one, weight and phone features etc.

Actually if you look at iPhone users profile they are trendier like to go for latest gizmos and love to be first one to adopt technology. Of course smart phone users are people who want more then talking on phone. Even after these questions users are debating should they give up on iPhone?
If at all people want to switch from iPhone to Google’s Nexus One phone it will be due to carrier service, software independence or unlocked feature. Consumers are frustrated with tough terms and conditions with current carrier AT&T and no freedom to choose alternate carrier. Lot of consumers are thinking maybe time has come for healthy competition in smart phone space with economical deals for consumers.

Both of these phones attract consumers for different reasons, for some look and feel is the main thing. For some cool features of Nexus/iPhone phones are important. Most of the heavy duty users will like to evaluate both phones based on their interface to applications, browser and how desktop applications can be ported and used on these phones. Of course Games, music, videos and social web experience plays important part.

Nexus one may score points over iPhone in freedom to choose software for running application. The current iPhone models work well with their set of applications and when it comes to interfacing with other software not backed by manufacturer it requires certain workaround. I believe as more consumer add to smart phone space it will put pressure on Google and Apple to make phone independent of proprietary software dependence.

Google’s Nexus One phone is designed to lure active laptop users to new smart phone space. Google is interested in building new high caliber Nexus One community. I

I guess if you are not active user on smart phone and your interaction with phone is to just do the communication part then it does not matter what phone you choose iPhone or Nexus One. The choice is only for those active users who explore the software and are more tuned to open community and coupled with less economical service plan may be deciding factor to shift from iPhone to Nexus One. This is just the healthy beginning of competition soon we will get more software updates from both phone manufactures.

If you planning to buy smart phone then iPhone and Nexus one is definitely good choice to make. Switching to Nexus One from iPhone may be difficult but being first time buyer for smart phone then Google’s Nexus one will be right choice to make.

Hello world!
